How Can I Accept Gaining Weight?
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 05:02PM Q. How can I accept gaining weight?
A. Let's say your best friend buys you an expensive and beautiful pink sweater. You love everything about the sweater - how it feels against your skin, how it is tailored, how you think of your best friend's love for you every time you wear it. There is only one problem - you hate the color pink!
But the sweater is so valuable to you in other ways that you are willing to try. You WANT to try. You don't want your best friend to feel hurt because you never wear it. And nothing else that you own is so soft and warm and comfortable and comforting as this sweater. It is just the color that will take some getting used to.
In the same way, we accept the gaining weight part of recovery by focusing on all the other things that gaining weight brings to us. We don't focus on the gaining weight - Ed in our heads ("Ed" is for eating disorder by the way) is never going to like gaining weight, and truthfully we don't either at first because we are not used to how it looks and feels.
But eventually we do grow into our new shape and size, and we certainly grow into enjoying all the things the weight gain gives us - more energy for activities and relationships, the ability to get through a day without thinking about food all day long, better health inside and out, the chance to serve and give back to our community and to others who are still struggling - the benefits of the weight gain are what helps us accept the weight gain itself.
Hope it helps!
