Is there an 'end' to recovery?

Q. I loved your book (Beating Ana). But is there an end?

A. That really depends on how you define 'recovery'. At some point it does become pure semantics - and each of us gets to figure out for ourselves what our goals are, what our definition of 'recovery' is, how hard we want to work, and how much time we are willing to invest.

I can't answer for everybody, obviously, but I will share with you that my own personal take on your question is that the answer is 'no' - but that is because, for me, I define recovery as 'making progress through life'.

In the beginning, I defined 'recovery' as 'becoming largely free from Ed-related thoughts and coping behaviors (where Ed = 'eating disorder')'. Today, my definition of recovery is 'removing the sense of limitation that stands between me and my dreams and life goals.'

So my definition of recovery evolved as I did, but I made a choice to continue using the word 'recovery' to define my ongoing progress.

That may not work for everyone - you may prefer to use the word 'recovery' to define cessation of Ed-related thoughts and behaviors, and when that happens you can place a 'period' at the end of that word and find a new word to describe new challenges and opportunities that arise in your world.

I hope that helps a bit. It is a great question - very deep and shows how much you want recovery and how intensely you are pondering the subject. And keep asking others for their thoughts too - you may just run across a great way of looking at the whole subject that really works for you that you can adopt as your own!
